how to extend an existing raid 5 array- C220M3

Hello

we have an existing UCS c220M3 server running as standalone
due to fiscal constraints at the time of order, we were only able to procure 4 HD for the server

we now wish to extend the raid array from 4 -> 8 HD.
we do not want to loose the existiong data or start from scratch

with EMC , Netapp and Qnap arrays, we can easily  extend an  existing volume.

I have searched cisco forms, support and google search with no luck
i only see references to the embedded MegaRaid controller or  the LSI MegaRAID external contoller
we have the CISCO UCS-RAIS-11-C220 hardware contolleron our c220 M3

any tips, guides  or links on how to do this would be appreciatted

Walter,

According to this guide:

http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/unified_computing/ucs/c/hw/C220/install/raid.html

For the controller UCSC-RAID-11-C220 to support 8 HDDs, you need 2 mini-SAS cables (PID: UCSC-CABLE1)

If you go here: http://tools.cisco.com/squish/56bE6 < Expanding a Virtual Drive, you will later need to use an additional tool according to the OS you are running, to increase the size of the partition you had previously made.

See this document for more information

http://www.lsi.com/sep/Documents/oracle/files/SAS2_IR_User_Guide.pdf or look out for "Online Capacity Expansion", which is the name of this feature.

Hope this helps,

-Kenny
