UCS-Mini vNIC speed in secondary chassis

Hi,

We have a new UCS-Mini with a secondary chassis connected, we have identical B200 M4s populated in each chassis, running ESXi.

At a vCenter level all of the vNICs reported for the blades in the primary chassis are showing as 10000Mbps whilst all the blades in the secondary chassis are saying 20000Mbps per VNIC but as far as we can tell these are all the same hardware and should all be at the higher speed.

All the blades are provisioned via the same UCS policies etc so we're not sure why the primary chassis is not reporting the full speed we're expecting.

Happy to provide FI etc etc details as needed.

Jim. You answered your query. The NIC speed reflected on the OS depends on the number of backplane connections to the blade from IOM.

In 6324 FI with VIC 1340 - Each FI/IOM has 1x10G trace per blade per fabric

In 2208 IOM with VIC 1340 - Each IOM has 2x10G trace per blade per fabric

Hence the OS sees 20G speed on blades connecting to the 2208 IOMs which basically has more backplane ports going to a blade.

I think the UCS Mini specsheet might help. Please check page 38,39 - http://www.cisco.com/c/dam/en/us/products/collateral/servers-unified-computing/ucs-b-series-blade-servers/ucsmini-specsheet.pdf

It explains connectivity between B200M4 and 6324 when you have a VIC1340+port-expander/VIC1380 in the mezz slot. However in your setup you don't have an adapter in the second slot.

In general, the 6324 has 16 backplane ports starting 1/9 through 1/24 with 2 ports going to each blade. The second HIF port per blade will come up only when you have a second adapter(port-expander/vic1380)

What model of IOM do you have in the secondary chassis?

What model of adapter(s) do you have in B200M4? Do you have a port-expander in any of them?

The upper (primary) chassis contains eight half-width blade servers and two 6324 FIs 

The lower (secondary) chassis contains eight half-width blade servers and two 2204XP FEXs

The primary chassis has 6324 FIs, the secondary has 2208XP IOMs.

All the B200M4s are the same: 1340 VICs with no port expander, so 4 DCEs or 20Gbps per fabric.
