what is named vlan/vsan

Hello,

I saw two new concepts in UCS documentation -- named vlan and name vsan.

A named VLAN creates a connection to a specific external LAN. The VLAN isolates traffic to that external LAN, including broadcast traffic.

A VLAN is a switched network that is logically segmented by function, project team, or application, without regard to the physical locations of the users. VLANs have the same attributes as physical LANs, but you can group end stations even if they are not physically located on the same LAN segment.

I don't understand them well? Does anyone know what are they and the scenario we use named vlan/vsan?

Thank you very much!

Sha

Hi Sha

Within UCS, a Vlan/Vsan can have a name (therefore named), and a Vlan/Vsan id.

The name has local significance, the id global.

You could do e.g. aliasing: Vlan "Server" = id 100, Vlan "Server-Mgt" = id 100.
But I have seen crazy things like Vlan "Vlan1" = id 3 ! therefore don't trust the number which might be embedded in the name !

The Northbound switches only understand vlan id's not vlan names !

Walter.
