Thank you both for your help. That makes sense with the diversity issue. Since this is a pilot, I'll try one antennae mounted in the garage and shape/direct the signal to the area in front as well.
OK we've set the switchports to host and stil had the same problem. We turned off STP altogether (single switch environment) and still had the problem. I'm going to recommend that we next force the speed and duplex settings for both sides and see ...
