You might want to try Multipath on the SUN. This will allow you to connect to both switches and provide failover functionality.

You should be able to run VRRP on the Passport 5430s. Provided that both connections from the passports are on the same VLAN on the Distribution 6509s, and there is some kind of connection between the two Distribution 5609s.

Are there two MSFCs in the 6500? If so, make sure each VLAN interface on the MSFC has unique IP address, and use HSRP address for your default gateway. I have seen this problem before with dual MSFC.
