I have tried with and without dhcp enabled and I can never ping 8.8.8.8 successfully.And I never can ping the modem successfully either.

Alain,No not yet, sidetracked with job interviews.I do have 2 questions: 1) do I need an excluded-address for the part thats faces the internet? And 2) does it matter if E0/0 or E0/1 faces one side or the other, right now E0/0 faces my local network ...

PC already has a static IP address."To what port in the modem are connecting your router?" It's connected to the rj-45 port, it's the only option.Will do a sh run and disable dchp server next try.
