Is it possible to use the Cisco AS5400 with thirdparty SS7 gateways other than PGWs ?
If yes what protocol is used to btw Access server and SS7 gateway?

It is possible to find some ISDN -> SS7/C7 converters, but don't expect much in the way of debuggability or flexibility. I've used a few (Encore comes to mind) with limited results. the standard protocol for interconnection is probably EuroISDN, for what it's worth.

If you are interested, my company provides a hosted PGW solution. Pay only for the T1/E1 that you use.

There's the Italtel iMSS MGC which does more or less the same as PGW does, i.e. it controls the AS5XXX through MGCP and talks SS7 to the PSTN.
But what's wrong with PGW to do that for you ?

Thanks for all your replies!
Nothing wrong with PGWs.
We were looking at cheaper alternatives to PGWs and still use our existing investment in AS5400s since we have to migrate to SS7 from PRIs.
