Hi, I am a home user and ex-programmer. I'm using the Cisco SPA112 with the latest firmware 1.2.1 (004). Every two or three days the ATA crashes. Here are the symptoms:
a) no dial tone
b) line 1 LED is ON (as normal)
c) ATA is PINGable
d) IVR is unresponsive
e) web setup URL does not respond, can not get to the setup page
f) The reset button does not respond.
My only recourse now is the check if I have a dialtone every morning and, if not, pull and reinsert the power plug. The cold boot of course results in the local log being lost. Here is the log right after boot up.

Here are some things I have tried on my own, to no effect:
a) Tried running with Provisioning/Firmware Upgrade/Upgrade set to false.
b) Reloaded the firmware with IE. Before, I did it with FireFox.
c) Did a factory reset and re-entered the settings suggested for my ATA from Callcentric.
How should I proceed?

Hey Walter. I haven't seen this issue as of yet with 1.2.1-004. If you open up a ticket with Cisco TAC they can give you a beta firmware that's not released yet. v1.3.0-008 which should have a lot of fixes (cisco wont tell me which ones). Their proceedure is to send you the newest beta to test and hope it fixes your issue before they investigate it further.

Can't open a TAC case without a service contract. I'm a home user. I'm tempted to just get an OBi100.

Hello Tom,
Please open a case with our support center who can then provide the firmware to you.
Information can be found at the following website:

I'm facing exactly this same problem, with SPA112 and FW 1.2.1 (004). How exactly do I open a case w/o a support contract? My only option seems to be live chat, and I've been sitting and waiting in that window for quite some time now.
I initially thought this problem was connected with the recent attack on CallCentric, but finding this thread suggests I need to pursue firmware.

Haven't tried to open the case yet. Thought I might try it over the phone on Monday. Understand I am bit under-motivated now because I've already ordered a OBi100. That link Lance gave indicates support is free. You need your serial number.
I use Callcentric too, but I severly doubt their DDoS problem could lead to my IVR and web management page being
down, AND my reset button not working. Those should be bullet proof. When your little line 1 LED won't light --THAT's a problem with Callcentric not being able to get you registered, the rest I belive is buggy firmware.
BTW, the following settings from Callcentric are working much better for me:
Proxy = callcentric.com
Outbound Proxy = srv.callcentric.com
Use Outbound Proxy = yes
Use DNS SRV = yes
DNS SRV Auto Prefix = yes
Register Expires = 120
...note especially the Outbound Proxy setting. I have also turned off Bonjour FWIW.

Thanks for the update, Tom. What made you decide to abandon the SPA112 for the OBi100? I know it's not a ton of money, but you had something already paid for that is (theoretically) fixable.

I live out in the boonies of western NC. Cell phone signal out here is iffy. I recently canned our land line per economics. I have a 98-year-old living here and this VOIP connection is our only means of contact, so I need something dependable and now. I have no doubt the Cisco hardware is good, but if you read on the net the history of problems the firmware has presented and how long it took to get the problem resolved you will understand. Also, in my dial-up modem days, actually not so long ago, I always found it nice to have a hardware backup, so this will not be an exception. Which I use as my primary I have yet to decide.

I'm trying to open a case, but the only way appears to be live chat and it gives me no idea when or if the support engineer will ever join the chat. Is there any other way to do this? Please understand, with all due respect, that I don't have time to spend the day staring at the live chat window.

If you are having the same problem, just monitor this thread. I will certainly see this thru, for good or bad, and post my results here. I opened my case via the toll free number listed on the link that Lance provided. I think I received an extra boost because of Lance's post. The engineer contacted me and is going to send me the firmware.
10-29-2012 06:11 AM
OK Lance I've opened a case. We will see how it goes.

I just updated my router firmware to the latest non-beta version. (I have a Asus RT-N66U.)

The servers of my VSP, Callcentric, are in lower Manhattan, and their power has been cut due to the storm. So until things return to normal there, I will not be able to test.
