Need some basic info

I am learning VoIP and am going to set one up at my house for experience training but need some advice since I am getting some conflicting information.

I read that all you need for a basic VoIP setup, (not Unified,) is an IP Phone like the one I purchased, (the Cisco SPA 504G,) and a broadband connection, which I have actually two of going to my house.  On the other side of the coin I am reading that you need a PoE switch and a special Cisco-Linksys phone router.

Currently, I have two broadband DSL connections to the house, five Cisco 2621 routers and five Cisco 2950 switches; (I have a home Cisco Lab as well,) and I know the switches are not PoE.

So, being new to configuring a basic VoIP here, am I good to go or do I need additional equipment?

Hi Steve,

You can use a ITSP (Internet Sip Provider) to register your IP Phone or I think you will need the UC320 or Asterisk (open source base on linux) to register the IP Phone SPA504G.

The first link, (SPA8800) is giving me a "Forbidden 403" message but the second link looks good.  I will follow up on this. Thanks again.

Also, if you know of any good Cisco text books on basic Voip, let me know as I am learning this on my own as the college here in down does not provide formal training.  I have ordered "Voice Over IP Fundamentals" and will be reading this to start.

Hi,
First of all, you have to understand that VOIP theory is the way we can send and receive VOICE with packets. Before we were send and receive voice by using analog theories (pots line) then it improved to be digital theories ( E1 ). Now we are talking about packets.
My point is VOIP is nothing to do with cisco IP PHONE in term of vendor but any device makes my analog voice signal into digits on packets transfered on the network is called VOIP.
