No Wireless after upgrade to 8.2 and factory reset

We had to switch to our demo UC-540 after the upgrade to 8.2 bricked our production UC-540.

I figured it would be best to reset the demo unit to factory defaults and configure it from scratch.

Now, it appears that everything is how I want it except it appears there is no wireless capability at all.

The only thing I did was to change the encryption from NONE to WPA2-PSK for both WLANS.

I also changed cisco-voice to BROADCAST SSID.

I've changed antenna's, turned wireless off and on, changed SSID's, set encryption to NONE, rebooted all to no avail.

I've opened Case number 618735297 with support.

Support wasn't able to fix it in a screen sharing session.

After some time I asked if there was a subject matter expert available...but the support agent basically stated that even though I am a Cisco Select Partner and Small Business Communication Specialist, that I am not entitled to access to a subject matter expert.

I asked what If I was entitled to access one. He replied they are all gone for the day.

So I have three questions. Why doesnt my UC-540 wireless work. Why did I go through the trouble to become a Cisco Partner? And, Why would anyone pay extra for 24x7 support when there are no competent staff after 6PM EDT?

SIGH!!!

Brooke,

If you are free for a TeamViewer session, I would be happy to try and help you get this going for you. I cannot answer all three of them, the first one I don't know because I would need to look at it, and the the other two, well.....

wicomoz@hotmail.com is my MSN if you need me and we can arrange for a remote session using TeamViewer and we can go through it, would need CCA and at least putty or something equivalent.

Cheers,

David.

I would call in and ask to have the ticket escalated to tier 2, those guys really know their stuff.  If they refuse, ask to speak with a manager.

Hi Brooke,

Thanks for granting me access to your system it was much appreciated.

From the diag/tech  info I was able to obtain, the Radio card is in a semi functional  state, the card itself appears to be working but the ability to  broadcast is not, you can see that it is processing quite a fair bit of  packet transaction and there is just nothing coming back, this is  typical of a stale-mate card.

I think upgrading to 8.2  would not have caused it any problems, well it should not have in  anyway, and we have recreated the whole setup and I have compared it to a  UC-540W I have here and the configs are identical minus the US configuration.

My suggestion is to do a complete power down of the unit, wait a little and then power it back up, this should reset the card properly as opposed to just a reboot/reload, a complete power cycle can sometimes correct things that a reload otherwise couldn't.

If this still fails to come good again, then you will need to log an RMA in on the unit, the upgrade to 8.2 could just be purely coincidental, I have seen enough of the logs to see that it should be functioning as programmed, even if the Antenna was removed it is still broadcasting with enough power to reach anything within its vicinity, and it cant even do that.

You have had more than one person now look at this  unit, your next step is back everything up and prep the system for a  replacement.

Please keep me updated with this, I would like to know if you got it going or if an RMA had to be done, and I am certainly willing to look into anything else relating to it if you need me again.

Cheers,

David.

Thanks David for your help.

It turns out the solution was to remove power from the unit for 30 minutes and then reapply power.

Previous multiple restart commands from within the CCA apparently were not the same as a 30 minute power cycle.

Hi Brooke,

I had a gut feeling that was going to resolve it... I have had to do that a lot lately with just about every system I have deployed in the last month and a bit, reloads are just not working as they should be.

I had to try and see if we could resolve it on an IOS level before a full power cycle as I believe this should only be a last resort, but recently if I apply Park Slots on a system after I have staged it in the LAB (Meaning if I create them whilst out on a customers site) I have to physically power the system down and power it back up to get them to work properly or even work at all.

Yet to establish if 8.2 will yield the same issue, so far I catch most of these problems during the staging process, its the live production systems that concern me when doing upgrades or updates.

Hope it remains well for you and no more headaches with it

Cheers,

David.

I spoke too soon.

I had to relocate the unit from my workbench back to the rack and the wireless SSID comes up for about 30 seconds after reboot, then disappears.

I has been working for a few days and through 2 power cycles. A power cycle today does not fix it again, like last time.

Its also funny... I think I remember configuring 2 park slots 700/701 about when the wireless issues were first noticed.

I don't think I have any choice other than to RMA this unit.

Hi Brooke,

GAH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I just hate it when that happens

Ok so until this unit is RMA'ed can you please use CCA lock in the channel to either 6 or 11, possibly where it is located there could be some interference (Microwave and other airwave junk disposals).

If this works then maybe it will hold of until the new unit arrives, the Auto Channel Scanning should be doing this for you, but I find this jumps around way too much for certain devices to keep following it.

Give it a shot and let us know... NOTE: I don't know if with your system if you will need to do another power cycle to it to get it to stick, if you do then this also needs to be reported to the engineering team as well.

Cheers,

David.

I believe I have identified the cause of the wireless issue.

When running a Cisco SGE2000P switch;

And you (or Cisco) have manually created a VLan100 in the switch in order to support Cisco SPA525G2 phones;

And you either turn on the UC540 with the Cisco SGE2000P on and connected to the UC540;

Or, you make a configuration change to the UC540 with the Cisco SGE2000P on and connected…

Based on our preliminary testing, the UC540 detects some type of a VLAN conflict (possibly flashing a brief, disappearing message in the CCA) and then the UC540 disables wireless connectivity.

We are working on confirming this.
