SPA-942 handset muted

I have 12 Linksys SPA942 IP Phones that I'm using with Asterisk. 5 of them are having handset input problems. It's like the handset mic is permanently muted when the phone is not in handset mode, but the mute button is not active. When the phone is in speaker phone mode then the handset mic will pick up audio. The headset mic ports work fine. I have tried the following:

  1. Toggle the mute button
  2. Swap the cords with working phones
  3. Swap the handsets with known working handsets
  4. Factory reset
  5. Modify the handset gain setting under the Phone configuration tab
  6. Upgrade the firmware (was 5.1.15(a), now 6.1.5(a))

None of these have worked.

Any suggestions?
