ASA5505 New Configuration Setup Issue

I just received in my ASA5505 yesterday which will be used to replace an old Cisco PIX which is in production in our company.  I read through the quick start, so I downloaded and installed Java to make sure I had the latest client and then connected the special Blue Console cable to the ASA5505 and my Laptop.  I opened a browser and type in https://192.168.1.1/admin as stated in the quick user guide.  I do not get a page to come up.  The Power, Status, and Active lights are on.  I do not have the ASA5505 plugged directly into the network; it is just connected via the cable.  The laptop is connected to the network.

I have been looking but not finding a missed step.  How can I connect to the device to get this configuration setup?  Our current PIX is actually a loaner as ours died (flash) a week ago, so need to get this up and running, correctly, soon.

Browser is Internet Explorer 8

Laptop connected to ASA5505 is Windows 7 Pro – 64-Bit

Any help is appreciated.

How are you connected to the  5505?

With the blue console cable or yellow ethernet cable?

I am pretty sure with the console cable you have to work through some type of telnet/ssh client.  I use putty to do this.  To connect this way be sure to plug the blue cable into the mgmt port.

IF you are connecting with the yellow ethernet cable then simple plug it into port 1 and then do the https://192.168.1.1 from your web browser.

Hope this helps.

Good luck!

Thanks for your reply and what you told me makes sense.  LOL.. I was connecting via the blue console cable and a browser.  I didn't want to connect it to the network yet as I have a working in production PIX firewall currently, so can't plug in to the ISP yet until this is configured.

So, I will give the proper method of connection a try.  Thanks.

Glad I could help!!
