We are running IOS 8.2(2) on the ASA 5510.  Is there a first level password?  If there is, is there a way to find out what the first level password is?

Thanks.

Laura

Laura,

You can set passwords for telnet, ssh, console etc through the use of the "aaa authentication" commands. If you have these commands in your config, then you are requiring authentication. You can read more about this here:

http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/security/asa/asa80/configuration/guide/mgaccess.html#wp1042026

On top of this, you can also set an enable password to require passwords before allowing them into enable nmode of the ASA. This password is configured with "enable password"

http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/security/asa/asa80/command/reference/ef.html#wp1922477

If you are being prompted for a password but do not know the password, you probably need to perform password recovery:

http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/security/asa/asa71/configuration/guide/trouble.html#wp1049302
