Not sure why this is posted in wireless, but it sounds like the program relies on connection back to a server that is located on a network that is accessible via the vpn tunnel that is created when you connect via your vpn client. One possible behavior is that the application can't make the connection when there is no path (via vpn) back to the server so it quits.
