How to establish a connection with a remote computer ?

I wanted to know all the ways by which I can establish a connection with a remote computer over the internet.

Also if there is some LAN in my friend's house in America with many computers say having IP (192.168.1.2,192.168.1.3,192.168.1.4 etc etc. and having a public IP of 144.25.72.42) then how can I tell the connection to first go the public IP address and then go to the specific computer of 192.168.1.4.

Also tell me to what public IP addresses are assigned to, Is it assigned to the modem/router/default gateway or what ?
