under cisco downloads and i go to products - cisco ios - and then the following are listed:

  1. Cisco IOS Software Release 15M&T
  2. Cisco IOS Software Release 15S
  3. Cisco IOS Software Release 12.4 Family

Which one should I download?

If your DRAM supports 15.xT go there.

thanks for your prompt reply.

When I select Cisco IOS Software Release 15M&T as the options of IOS's I end up with this one: 15.1.3T(ED).  Is that ok?  What is the diff with the T's, M's (ED) and other letters in them?

Then when I click on 15.1.3T(ED) I see the following with min memory of 128mb and flash of 32mb (my current 1841 has a flash cap of 30mb, is the SDM jus reading it wrong?)

I am assuming it's not the BROADBAND so that leaves me with ip base w/o crypto.  that sounds like no vpn would be possible.  Would that be the correct ios?

thanks again.

Firstly, you need to get the IOS with Crypto.  Go to www.cisco.com/go/fn and verify if you can run VPN with the feature set of your choice.

Next is the amount of flash.  Get a 3rd party (up to 2Gb) and test if it is "recognized" by the router.

Next, you're in the process of upgrading the IOS, might as well upgrade the bootstrap too.  Download and upgrade the bootstrap to 12.4(13r)T5 so you can boot the router via USB.
