Offsite Backup over VPN is slow

Management wants an Off-Site Backup server to backup up ~40 MB nightly. I tried this, but it's extremely slow over the PIX 501. Is there any way of increasing the bandwidth for this?

Obviously, I am a novice with this, but any help is greatly appreciated.

What are you backing up and what throughput are you getting?

I'm backing up word/excel files (no MSExchange or SQLServer databases). Throughput is about 40kps (I have no real way of tracking this, it just seems real slow. Both onsite and offsite locations are broadband. Off-site uses VPN Client (No PIX on it's end).
