VPN Client wont connect after hibernate/standby

I'm on a dell xps system, windows 7 (64), running vpn client 5.0.07. Most of the time I take the system out of hibernate/standby I am able to connect the vpn client without any issues. About 10% of the time the client runs fine but it will continually fail to connect, eventually timing out every attempt with a connection error. My internet connection continues to work fine. Rebooting the box works but restarts are costly and I'm trying to find a way to fix this when it occurs.

I know the basic solution is to stop the client before going into standby but I often forget. I've tried several steps with ipconfig, or

disabling and re-enabling the network interface etc and none work. Does anyone have a reliable way of resetting or clearing the clients state so that it can connect without needing a reboot? I'd appreciate any help.
