Hello,
The last generation of WLAN controllers integrated in switches had some problems and limitations.
Does anyone know whether the 9800 embedded also requires access points to be connected directly to the switch that houses the controller?
So far I couldn't find anything about this in the Cisco documentation.

No, you do not require AP to directly connect to 9300 series switches that run WLC functionality. Refer below Ciscolive presentation for more details
