The versions of the ME and AP do not match. For details, refer to the Deployment Guide.

https://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/td/docs/wireless/controller/technotes/8-5/b_cisco_mobility_express_8_5/b_cisco_mobility_express_8_5_chapter_0111.html#concept_4E1DCD5CC7A74E9FA52AF3B393D071D8

Upgrading the AP version directly is also an option.
If the Controller version is 8.5.151, the AP version should be 15.3 (3) JF10.

* Note that you should choose C3700 instead of AP3G2.

#archive download-sw /reload tftp://<tftp server ip address>/<filename.tar>

  1. Go HERE
  2. Download the file "ap3g2-rcvk9w8-tar.153-3.JK1.tar" and put it into your TFTP server.
  3. On the AP, enter the following command
    archive download-sw /over tftp://<TFTP_IP_ADDRESS>/ap3g2-rcvk9w8-tar.153-3.JK1.tar
  4. Reboot the AP.

Console into the AP and post the complete output to the command "dir".

Download image failed, notify controller!!! From:17.1.1.29 to 0.0.0.0, FailureCode:3

@HaifengLi

The AP has joined a 9800 loaded with Amsterdam-17.1.1 and it is trying to go back to AeroOS.

That is why I'm asking to see directory contents to see if the AP still have an RCV folder or not.

I'm not sure, but I think 140.231.150.45 is the ME (Controller) IP address, and the log looks like join fails because the image cannot be downloaded.
It doesn't look like joined to C9800 now, but as you said AP is trying to join AeroOS.
So if tftp / ftp is set on the ME (Controller) to upgrade the AP, or directly upgrade the AP, it may work.

Well, if the RCV folder is still available, then delete the all the CAPWAP folders and reboot the AP.
Because there is only one valid IOS left, the AP is guaranteed to boot into RCV.
WARNING:  This is a 2700/3700 AP trying to join a controller running 8.5.X.X.  There is a "feature" whereby the AP will download the firmware (from the controller) TWICE, reboot TWICE before the radios start serving clients.  We call this behaviour as  "double-download".

Thanks @Leo Laohoo !!! Below from 'dir' command. There is only one AireOS and no RCV folder. And I did reset twice, the same error.

Directory of flash:/

Thanks, the output is very helpful.

This is the reason why the AP cannot download the firmware.

Issue the following commands:

debug capwap console cli
delete /f /r flash:update

Reboot the AP and see if the AP can now download the firmware from the controller.

"update" is deleted from flash. But the same error. There might be no correct image from my Controller. Should I change AP image to "c3700-k9w8-tar.153-3.JF10.tar" as @HaifengLi 's advice, and upgrade directly instead of from Controller?

Post the complete output to the WLC command "sh ap bundle all".

Sorry, no command "show ap bundle all". Only command "show ap packet-dumb"

AP0062.ec3c.6db4>show ap ?
packet-dump AP packet-dump commands

or

AP0062.ec3c.6db4#show ap ?
packet-dump AP packet-dump commands

  1. Go HERE
  2. Download the file "ap3g2-rcvk9w8-tar.153-3.JK1.tar" and put it into your TFTP server.
  3. On the AP, enter the following command
    archive download-sw /over tftp://<TFTP_IP_ADDRESS>/ap3g2-rcvk9w8-tar.153-3.JK1.tar
  4. Reboot the AP.

Hi @Leo Laohoo and @HaifengLi ,

With "c3700-k9w8-tar.153-3.JF10.tar", all 3700 APs can join 3800 WLC. Thanks you all for very prompt support.

Hi @HaifengLi ,

I will ask my partner for 15.3 (3) JF10. Is the link below correct location for JF10:

https://software.cisco.com/download/home/285029867/type/280775090/release/15.3.3-JF10

Thanks.
