The AP recycles and assign itself a new dhcp address each time/cycle...

There's the issue right there.

vWLC means that the license needs to be activated before a single AP can join.

And since the EULA wasn't accepted, this means that no license is enabled.

Cisco WLC Licensing

Thank you Leo, I have accepted  the license aggrement, but still have the exact same issue, same errors in logs.

OPTION_43: Controller address 172.16.10.5 obtained through DHCP
%CAPWAP-3-ERRORLOG: Did not get log server settings from DHCP.
%CAPWAP-3-DHCP_RENEW: Could not discover WLC using DHCP IP. Renewing DHCP IP.
%CAPWAP-3-ERRORLOG: Invalid event 38 & state 2 combination.

Then the AP keeps requesting a new IP address from DHCP!

Dont know if it makes a difference, as I was saying this AP 1131 was converted from Autonomous to Lightweight AP

I still have 2 more AP1131 that are still Autonomous mode, I can try to convert another one.

Here is the procedure I used to convert, (taken on the Cisco website):

  • I configured the BVI1 interface on the AP to IP 10.10.10.102 DGW 10.10.10.1
  • Set the TFTP server on 10.10.10.1, root directory to C: and put the c1140-k9w8-tar.124-25d.JA.tar in that directory
  • Then from the console port, I typed ap#archive download-sw /force-reload /overwrite tftp://10.10.10.1/c1140-k9w8-tar.124-25d.JA.tar

And how many AP license have been activated on the vWLC.  By default & because it's a vWLC, 0 AP license is the starting value.

Next, console into the AP and enter the following command:  capwap ap primary-base <WLC Name> <WLC IP address>

Thank you Leo, In MONITOR -  SUMMARY  It says 200 AP supported.

I have entered the command for primary-base, I get the same errors. It says it can't discover the WLC with the IP address the DHCP server has assigned, so it tries to renew the IP on and on ...

I have upgraded 2nd AP1130 from Autonomous to LW, here is the reboot log

I have the same error, also tried a 3rd AP1131, this time using the rvck image with same issue

Must me something the AP is not getting for the DHCP or the vWLAN Controller to attach...

here is the reboot log of the 2nd AP1130 immediately after the upgrade to LW:

Make sure the WLC has the correct time and date. 1 minute error is reason enough to stop the APs from joining.
Make sure NTP is configured.

John,
Please change the following commands on the router for DHCP options:
option 43 hex f104.ac10.oa05 to option 43 hex f104ac100a05

option 60 ascii "Cisco AP 1131" to option 60 ascii "Cisco AP c1130"

Thank you Srkala

The typo with o and 0 was fixed a long time ago.
when I enter f104ac100a05, the router adds the dots between the octet, and changes it to f104.ac10.0a05
I have added the option 60, it did not make a difference.

Here is the config from the 2811

Ok, I've got a few more tricks up my sleeves.

Can you please console into the AP and post the complete output to the command "dir".

Thank you Leo, here the flash directory

The AP was defaulted (20sec++ mode button with power applied) when I migrated from autonomous a LWAPP

Hi There,

How many AP's are currently associated to the WLC?

hello Jürgen

this is a LAB system and I’m trying to connect the first AP.

(Nuts.  No RCV folder.)

Ok, no go HERE and download the WIRELESS LAN LWAPP RECOVERY file (c1130-rcvk9w8-tar.124-25e.JAP12.tar)

Format the flash of the AP and unpack the RCV file to the AP.

Here's how it's done:

1.  Console into the AP;

2.  In enable mode, enter the command "deb cap con cli".

3.  Format the flash using the command "format flash:"

4.  This will take about 5 to 10 minutes;

5.  Once the flash has been complete, unpack the RCV from the TFTP server to the AP (make sure the AP has an IP address) using the command "archive tar /x tftp://<TFTP_IP_ADDRESS>/c1130-rcvk9w8-tar.124-25e.JAP12.tar flash:"

6.  Reboot
