C2700 AP Not Joinining vWLC

NETAD

Hello I'm trying to get my AP to join my vWLC and it's not working. I've tried multiple versions of the vWLC with the same behavior. Something is wrong with my AP. It joins for a brief moment then it drops. Can you assist please. I've tried resetting through the mode button but that didn't do it. I'm using 8.3.102 for the controller version

I got some messages from the AP while joining.

Thanks

The AP logs show that the AP is still getting the IP from DHCP server. Probably you missed to to save the static config on the AP (write mem).

and I see that the AP joins the WLC also creates a DTLS tunnel  but for some reason keeps on sending a new Join request to the same WLC even after that. I suspect that there may be something wrong on the WLC side config. Is this the only AP that you have or any other AP is able to associate to this WLC ?

I see this log in the AP:

Mar 3 20:40:18.903: %PARSER-4-BADCFG: Unexpected end of configuration file

It may be normal but I never noticed this log in the AP bootup. So , not sure.

Since, the AP is able to join the WLC once but drops off again, let's try this:

>> Check the config on the WLC once again.

>> Run "debug capwap errors enable" on the WLC during the whole process.

>> Initiate a continuous ping to the AP from the WLC VLAN to make sure that the AP is reachable and it doesn't lose its IP after the association.

Cheers,

Manish

Hi

I'd say that the problem may be this:

*Mar 3 20:38:41.659: %CAPWAP-3-DHCP_RENEW: Could not discover WLC. Either IP address is not assigned or assigned IP is wrong. Renewing DHCP IP.
*Mar 3 20:38:44.759: %DHCP-6-ADDRESS_ASSIGN: Interface BVI1 assigned DHCP address 10.88.88.11, mask 255.255.255.0, hostname APa89d.2188.3f5c

Double check if the IP address provided by DHCP is correct. The IP is in a different network, then, you need a gateway to get to the WLC.

-If I helped you somehow, please, rate it as useful.-

I'm able to ping the wlc from the AP.

Going with your information that the AP joins for a brief moment and then drops off , It appears to me that the AP may be losing the IP every now and then. Where is the AP getting IP from ? What is the lease time ? Can u configure a static IP on the AP and also a static entry for the WLC in the AP ?

Cheers,

Manish

It gets them from a win2k12 configured for DHCP. Can you share the commands to hardcode the IPs?

You can login to the AP console and issue :
AP#capwap ap ip address
AP#lcapwap ap ip default-gateway
AP#lcapwap ap controller ip address
AP#lcapwap ap hostname

But you will have to make sure that this static IP is excluded in the DHCP server. Otherwise , there may be an IP conflict.

Manish

Here's the log after static assignment.

Check firewall.

There's no firewall actually. It's literally one switch with one server running win2k12 and and the WLC running on vmware workstation. The server is in vlan 30(10.30.30.0/24) and the AP is in vlan 88(10.88.88.0/24) where the switch is doing layer 3 routing.

Put the AP and the controller in the same VLAN.

Unfortunately that also didn't do it. This time I used a dhcp pool on the switch with the DNS name to resolve the controller and join. The AP resolves the name correctly but not able to join still. What should I try next you think?

The AP logs show that the AP is still getting the IP from DHCP server. Probably you missed to to save the static config on the AP (write mem).

I finally got it to join. Don't know how. I re-installed the wlc even though I've done that many times but it seems like putting them on the same subnet is what made it work. Thank you all for your assistance on this.
