Hello everybody. I have been trying to configure cisco AIR-CAP1602i-E-K9 series Access point it is by default looking for WLC for the config files and other parameters i guess. but i dont have a WLC i want to configure this AP as a standalone autonmous access point . I connected it via switch where all ports of the switch are in data vlan 10 switch is connected to a router and i configured that router as its DHCP server . This is my first time i ever touched a cisco access point for configuration. bellow is the error that has been countinously comming up on the screen when i access the AP via console. Kindly any assistence in this regard would be highly appreciated. Thanks

If you do not have WLC, then you have to convert this AP to autonomous mode. Refer below post on that. You must have required image prior to this conversion. If you have support contract with Cisco you can download it from Cisco.com

hi,
rasika is right. the 'C' on CAP is controller-based AP and it needs to get its config from a WLC.
maybe can ask your vendor to swap to a AIR-SAP1602, which 'S' is for standalone.
otherwise, you'll need to convert AP's image from lightweight to autonomous/standalone.

Cisco Cap image access points controlled by only controller, as you don't have a wlc try to convert the access point to autonomous image
How to convert : https://supportforums.cisco.com/discussion/11751816/convert-1602i-lightweight-autonomous

There are two ways for you,
1, use Rasika's way, Give the AP a static IP, then upload the image from TFTP.
2, During the Booting up process, Press "ESC", abort the boot up process, you'll see this :
ap:
then
ap: ether_init
ap: flash_init
ap: tftp_init
ap: set IP_ADDR
ap: set NETMASK
ap: set DEFAULT_ROUTER
ap: tar -xtract tftp://< server ip address >/< image name > flash:
ap: boot flash:/< mage dir >/< image name >

i cant get to its config mode. how do i assign the static ip?

thankyou very much guys. very usefull info . though i still cant understand in order to convert it into autonomous or standalone i need to get to its configuration mode. if not can you refer me another way to install the standalone image for the conversion. the only problem still is that i cant get to its confiuration mode. how do i do that. ?
