Cisco 9800CL as N+1

Can Cisco 9800CL be configured as N+1 for the WLC 3504?

Are there any limitation on it?

As per my understanding, you always need N+1 same hardware model with the same version of code.

Short answer is no.

Reason: The software versions on the 3504 (AireOS) and the 9800 (IOS XE) would mean in an N+1 state all the APs would download new code and be offline for potentially 15minutes in the even of a primary failure, and then do the same when the primary comes back.

For N+1 you always want the same software version on both controllers. You also want the same capacity as well to be able to support all APs failing over
