It can be deployed as Mobility Express which has a controller function. You would need to have support to download the necessary files. Here is the ME guide:

Re: Cisco Aironet 1832i Access Point

One more question, looking at the mobility express deployment guide, there is no menton of IDS/IPS support?

Hi,

What do you want to detect with IPS? On-the-wire attacks, over-the-air attacks, non 802.11 attacks? Here's a document to give you more insight on what you would need to use, based on what you want to achieve:

https://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/td/docs/wireless/technology/wips/deployment/guide/WiPS_deployment_guide.html

Hi Cristian,

Thanks for the reply, the requirement is in regards to over-air-attacks.

However my question is in regards to using the 1832i Access Points without a WLC, so is this possible?

Hi,

Never looked at IPS support for in a mobility express deployment, but per the following document, it seems to support both IDS and wIPS.

Re: Cisco Aironet 1832i Access Point

Well you would need to look at something different. Typically controller based solutions have more features than controller based features on an access point. The data sheets also mention more features that an access point supports.
