Issues when pre-download image fro ap 1602E with WLC 8.5.140

Hi team,

We are having issues with the AP 1602e, this is the scenario.

we have two WLC one 2504 with the primary version 8.5.140.0 and secondary with the version 8.3.150.0 and the second WLC 5508 with the primary version 8.5.140.0 and secondary with the version 8.3.150.0,

all AP 1602e works great with 8.3.150.0 but when we try to pre-download the image for the version 8.5.140.0, nothing happend.

the same problem occurred with the WLC 5508 and 2504.

additionally we have a few AP 2602I, and this APs no present the issues, this APs works fine with the version 8.5.140.0.

Any help is very appreciated.

The 1602e is supported on that code: https://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/td/docs/wireless/compatibility/matrix/compatibility-matrix.html

SSH to the 1602 and confirm how much memory is available on the Flash. From memory its not enough to store the two software images.

Try just failing one of them over to the 8.5 controller and view what happens

Other option is to console one of them when you issue the pre-download and post the output here

Hi, thanks for the quickly replay, the aps have sufficient space in the flash, and this is not the problem because we update the controllers from 8.0.100.0 to 8.3.150.0 without any issue.

Don't worry about the pre-download.
When the WLC reboots the AP will download the correct firmware.

this is not true because we update the controller to 8.5.140.0, reboot without pre-download and the APs 1600 series stuck in download for hours and never update succesfully and we rollback to version 8.3.150.0 in order to work with cisco 1600 series, the 2600 series no present this issue.

That should not happen.
Can you show us the output from the pre-download command on the WLC?
Also have you tried to reboot a 1600 and then try the pre-download again?

Thanks for the suggestions, we restart one 1600 and happens the same, this is the log from the AP when we try to predownload the image.

Try the following on the WLC (AP needs to be connected):

show boot
config ap image predownload primary (or secondary, depending on which is the new from the previous output) <ap-name>
show ap image <ap-name>

Can you please show me the output of those commands?

And repeat the last command after 3 minutes and also show it here please. If it's still in pre-downloading, repeat the command 3 minutes later again and again until it's either failed or successful.

In order to solve the problem you need to download the AP bundle imagem from the Cisco web site:

You need to check through the command show ap bundle all if the 1600 image is present:

show ap bundle all:

(Cisco Controller) >show ap bundle all Primary Version : 8.5.140.0 AP Supplement Bundle :

Installed Primary AP Image Size Supported AP's ---------------- ---- ------------ ap1g1 13192 AP700 ap1g2 13660 AP1600 ap1g3 15380 AP1530 ap1g4 25772 AP1850/1810 ap1g5 22208 AP1815,1540 ap3g1 10168 AP3500 ap3g2 15380 AP2600,3600 ap3g3 39336 AP2800,3800,1560 ap801 8468 AP802 ap802 9968 AP802 c1550 10948 AP1550(128MB) c1570 13052 AP1570 c3700 14372 AP1700,2700,3700

Changes in Images and Installation Procedure for Cisco 2504 WLC, Cisco 5508 WLC, and Cisco WiSM2

Due to an increase in the size of the Cisco WLC software image, the Cisco 2504 WLC, Cisco 5508 WLC, and Cisco WiSM2 software images are split into the following two images:

  • Base Install image, which includes the Cisco WLC image and a subset of AP images (excluding some mesh AP images and AP80x images) that are packaged in the Supplementary AP Bundle image.
