RADIUS Server Failing to respond to request ID : xyz client MAC / WLC user

Hello All, 

 

I am facing issue with authenticating the client to WLAN network getting error :

 

RADIUS server X.X.X.X failed to respond to request (ID 17) for client MAC / user 'host/PC_Name'

 

Recent changes : replaced my 2504 WLC with 3504 WLC : 8.5.135.0, I hope my other configurations are fine. but this part is failing. Could some one help me please.

When you replaced your old WLC, did you configure the RADIUS server IP address and shared secret key on the new WLC?


Yes, I just made some adjustments on WLC. looks ok now. but observing other issue 

 

"WLC clients are not able to get the IP address, instead I see the IPv6 address" How do I solve this now. Please help.

Check your WLC menu under CONTROLLER==>Interfaces, select the interface that is mapped to your SSID, verify you specified your DHCP server address under DHCP Information.

yes, this looks all fine as I also had a check on other WLC how the interface is configured.

 

I notice : The AP's are assigned with IP address of server vlan ( same as the DHCP server Ip address range ).

You expecting Server Same vlan address to be allocated for users ? if not check the DHCP pool address or dhcp config (vlan)

I have a dedicated WLAN VLAN : 106 - 10.230.30/23, DHCP server is in range of : 10.230.48.0/24. 

 

I am receiving the IP address to AP in 10.230.48.X, Wish to have the IP address released in WLAN VLAN

 

you can also see the WLC interface config attached.

10.230.48.0/24  - DHCP Server Address are in the same Range, if you looking to have Difference Range for WLAN users, you need to create a different IP address scope in DHCP Servers.

 

what range you expecting for WLAN users, and what kind of DHCP Servers in your network (windows ?)

Yes I am looking for all WLAN user s to use 10.230.30.0 /23 network which in turn already configured in DHCP server.

My DHCP server is of Windows built.

From what I understand you have two queries:

1) Your AP's are getting IP from the wrong DHCP scope "I am receiving the IP address to AP in 10.230.48.X, Wish to have the IP address released in WLAN VLAN"

2) Your clients are not getting IP's for VLAN 106.

For query 1, verify that your AP's are assigned to the correct VLAN on the switch port configuration of the respective switch they connect to.

For query 2, Start from the LAN, by verifying that the DHCP scope actually works for VLAN 106 by assigning it to a switch port and test via cable.
If this test is successful, make sure your trunk uplink between the WLC and the switch allow VLAN 106.
If this is correct, disable the DHCP proxy on the VLAN 106 interface for the WLC, make sure you have the ip helper-address command enabled on the L3 switch SVI for VLAN 106 and see if this will allow clients to get IP addresses.

Now the AP has the address from 10.230.30.X ( desired pool )

Checked the IP address via Switchport mode access with the above IP pool vlan. - Works well.

Checked the IP helper address - Looks well

 

( I have 3 SSID's on WLC : campus - official, guest : visitors and MDM - for cell phones )
