Service port

hi

We had this strange issue today when we wanted to change the IP address of Service port on WLC 5508. Once we changed the IP address, it created a disassociations of a lot of AP's from controller.

We had to revert back the configuration. Normally , service port is an Out of band management port and should not affect the users.

Can someone help me understand what could have affected the networking?

thanks

well, it depends on what you set the new service-port address to.  what did you change it to, and what subnet(s) are your AP on?

show run int g3/0/10
Building configuration...

Current configuration : 136 bytes
!
interface GigabitEthernet3/0/10
switchport access vlan 44
switchport mode access
end

this is the configuration of the managemnt network interface . Initially the service port was set to 10.1.1.1 and was not routed anywhere.

AP is on a different VLAN 172.19.6.x

what did you change it to?

OK let me make it more clearer.

Initially it was set to 10.1.1.1 and during the intervention we changed it to 172.19.44.23 by connecting to the managemnet port on our switch

The service port should never be routeable. If the service ports see the management interface expect problems .. You will find this in the config guide ..

George is right. The service port never be routeable. Is you want to management the WLC trough Wireless you need to use managment ip address.

Hello,

As per your query i can suggest you the following solution-

The service port is used for out-of-band management of the controller. If the management workstation is in a remote subnet, you may need to add a route on the controller in order to manage the controller from that remote workstation. To do so, enter this command:

config route add network-ip-addr ip-netmask gateway

Hope this will help you.
