What traffic goes from AP to controller??

I need to understand all the reasons/scenarios when traffic must go back and forth from the LW access point to the controller?   Management? Layer 3 roaming?

Can someone help me understand this?

If you talk about Cisco WLC/AP products then depend on the AP mode this varies.

1. Local mode AP - ALL traffic has to go through WLC

2. FlexConnect mode AP (all control traffic has to go through WLC)

    a. Local Switching WLAN - All data traffic terminate on AP/locally connected switch.

    b. Centrally Switching WLAN - All data traffic has to go to WLC.
