WLC 3504 Smart Lic Activation

Dear Community,

 

For Smart Lic activation Internet are needed. What if management interface vlan can't access internet for the company policy reasons?
Cisco 3850 has capability to select which vlan to use to get an access to the internet. Any chance to have the same with wlc 3504?

Hi Slyfox,

 

Yes, WLC is required internet connectivity to activate and report the license usage on software portal Smart Licensing Guide.

Switching VLAN is not possible as far as I know. You can try any of the below option to get the License activated.

 

  1. If you have proxy in your environment, allow internet access for the WLC via Proxy to only Cisco.com domain (https://tools.cisco.com/its/service/oddce/services/DDCEService --> URL For Smart Licensing).
  2. Can have a Satellite Server in your environment, where the Satellite server will communicate to License portal. your WLC and other Cisco instance will communicate to Satellite server for licensing. 
  3. You can use RTU as well for licensing the WLC other than Smart Licensing.

Try this on your satellite server:

Dear Community,

Cisco support already the third week not able to provide clear information on why Smart license can't be activated.

satellite (and logs) are visible from  cisco smart account, but wlc activation stuck with

Smart Licensing is ENABLED

Registration:

Hi Slyfox,

 

Try rebooting the WLC once and register. Also change the Module on the Profile from sm-license-data to All .

 

If its not working, run the below debug commands while registration process and paste the output here.

 

debug license events enable
debug license errors enable
debug license info enable

I actually get the very same error with my smart licensing configuration for a WLC 3504, pointing to our Satellite server.

 

I have already successfully configured smart licensing with Satellite on several switch models and the latest FW, FirePower.

The only difference on the WLC conf is that it is necessary to create a new call-home profile, whereas previously I only modified the URL of the CiscoTAC-1 profile to point to the satellite. With WLC, the default CiscoTAC-1 can't be modified.

 

Hence my WLC is still stuck with:

Smart Licensing is ENABLED

Registration:
Status: REGISTERING - REGISTRATION IN PROGRESS
Export-Controlled Functionality: Not Allowed
Initial Registration: FAILED on Nov 26 21:00:17 2019 CET
Next Registration Attempt: Nov 26 21:16:49 2019 CET

License Authorization:
Status: EVAL MODE
Evaluation Period Remaining: 89 days, 23 hours, 9 minutes, 16 seconds

 

 

any help on the subject would be welcome.
