WLC 3650 MC (First time Installation)

Hi ,

We are facing network connectivity problem while setting up Cisco 3650 as MC. This is first time we are implementing Cisco 3650 as Mobility Controller ver 3.7E. AP 1700.

SSID is configured and tag with management VLAN and same VLAN is used for WLC management.

Problem: We are able to connect SSID and able to get IP address but not able to ping the gateway.

If you configure one switch as MC and another as MA, then once MC is down there is minimal impact to your wireless. MA still able to terminate existing CAPWAP and your clients able to connect to wireless.

There is no concept of MA will take MC role in case of a MC failure.

If you have multiple buildings and each building in its own SPG (one SPG mean one MC) and you require roaming when user moving across these buildings, then you need to peer MC-MC.

In that situation you have to have enough licence on switch 2 to manage additional 12 AP and physically you have to re patch them to switch 2.

I would distribute APs (if they are in same floor/building) in a manner a single AP go down would not impact users (AP1- sw1, AP2- sw2, AP3-sw1,etc)

thanks for rating our responses as well.

Hello Kamalesh,

Here is the complete configuration guide of the Mobile controller.

Please go through the  configuration steps : http://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/td/docs/switches/lan/catalyst3650/software/release/3se/mobility/configuration_guide/b_mobility_3se_3650_cg/b_mobility_3se_3650_cg_chapter_01001.html#d5488e14a1635

Thanks Prakash,

DHCP issue is resolved but for SPG peering problem in MC-MC mode , we require one switch as a MC and another one MA. Is there any possibility if MC switch goes down then MA will active or setting up both switch in MC mode using SPG.

Hi Manannalage,

If we have 2 Cisco 3650 in stack then it will possible to swap the Primary switch AP to secondary switch if Primary goes down and then all APs register to the secondary switch/WLC. We have 24 APs and 12 -12 distributed but license is only 12 for each WLC.

Hi Rasika,

Thanks for clarifying, I have one more query regarding maximum clients supported in per AP and recommended, Cisco doesn't mentioned in any document for maximum clients connect in per AP. Can you share any document related recommended maximum clients per AP.

Kamlesh

The maximum clients per AP is 200, but the rule of thumb is around 25-30 and this depends on the applications being used on the wireless. Voice and video, you would want to have less.  If it's email and web traffic you can have more, maybe 40-50.  All this is based out of end user experience and that is how you should judge the max limit to be in your environment.  What I have seen, no matter what model access points, is end user start noticing a difference in performance when there are around 30-35 clients on a given AP.  end users start complaining more when there were over 35.  Your users might vary, but never try to start out at 60+ per AP for example.

Mid you search the forum for that question, you will see a lot of post stating 20-30.
