WLC 4400 and WLC 5500

We have a site with a WLC 4400 and we would like to setup a Controller failover. The WLC 4400 is EOS/EOL and the replacement available is WLC 5508. Can someone advice me on how to configure these units in Primary /Secondary mode so that if any of the Controllers fail, the other one can take over?

Thanks,

Hi Akil,

The steps are shown in this good doc

http://www.cisco.com/en/US/tech/tk722/tk809/technologies_configuration_example09186a008064a294.shtml

Cheers!

Hi Rob,

Thanks for the prompt response.  So, it is possible to configure Primay/Secondary using two different models? What are the gotchas! I need to look forward to ?

So, it is possible to configure Primay/Secondary using two different models?

Make sure your configs are the same (except for the IP addresses, of course).

Because you have two distinctly different models/families, you may want to consider both WLC to have the same firmware.

This is "recommended" so that when the WAPs fail over they (the WAPs) don't have to upgrade/downgrade the firmware.

If you haven't purchased the 5508 but you are hoping to get another 4400 then consider Cisco Certified Refurbished Equipment.

Hi Akil,

You are most welcome

Yes, you can configure 4400's and 5500's in a redundant configuration, but both should be runningthe

same code version. I believe the latest version that is compatible for both is 7.0.220.0.

this is the last version that supports the 4400 series.

Here's a note that reflects the support;

Note

Controllers  do not have to be of the same model to be a member of a mobility group.  Mobility groups can be comprised of any combination of controller  platforms.

Hi,

As mention before the WLC do not need to be the same so that the access points can faillover from one WLC to the other.

The import thing is to have the WLCs running on the same code so that once the APs move from one WLC to the other they do not need to download the code the WLC has and also make sure that you have the WLAN configuration the same on both and correct information for primery, secondary, etc WLC.

Can anyone suggest the code version that is supported on WLC 4402 and 5508?

Akhil,

- 4402 supports the 7.0 train, 7.0.235.0 being the latest

AIR-WLC4400-K9-7-0-235-0.aes

- 5500 platform supports both 7.0 and 7.2.

Latest images-

7.0- AIR-CT5500-K9-7-0-235-0.aes

7.2- AIR-CT5500-K9-7-2-110-0.aes

Is there a separate firmware for the APs.  The AP models are 1241 and 1231.

Thanks to all for the contribution.

The light weight AP software has an "rcv" image.

e.g-

1241 AP image- c1240-rcvk9w8-tar.124-10b.JDA.tar

1231 AP image- c1200-rcvk9w8-tar.124-21a.JA2.tar

**

w8 stands for light weight image

w7- autonomous image

One the AP registers to a controller, the controller pushes down its code on to the LAP.

NOTE-

1231 AP is NOT supported on the 7.2 train.

1241 AP continues to be supported on 7.0 and 7.2

Mentioned in the 7.2 Release notes-
