WLC License issue

Hello,

I am having two 5520's. The primary wlc has  License type: Permanent and  count 920.

The secondary show Lic: Evaluation and count 1500 Licensing Expires: 12 weeks.

Now if the primary fails, is there any way the AP's register with secondary WLC even after 12 weeks?

If we have on active and standby setup, will the licence file also be supported or its per device base.

Is there any way to effectively use this lic.

Regards,

Satya.Mothukuri

Hi Satya,

When the WLC is in HA SSO, then there is no special config required on the AP level. This is box level Redundancy. Meaning, one of the WLC will acts as active and the secondary will remain Standby until the failover happens.

On the Licensing, the Secondary WLC needs minimum of 50 AP count or HA SKU license to enable SSO. During failover the secondary WLC will inherit the primary Controllers license and becomes active

Note: If you are using Eval license, post 12 weeks if the secondary WLC gets reboots manually or due to some trigger then it will lose the licensing info. Hence, it is always suggested to have permanent license of 50 AP count/HA SKU.

Hi Satya,

Only if both units were configured for HA SSO.

Thanks for your reply.

so in HA mode, the standby take over the license if the primary fail?the standby doesn’t need any license?

In HA mode, what is the AP congfiguration settings for High availability? I mean do we mention the primary controllers IP as active controller ip in HA pair and secondary controller ip as standby controller ip???

Correct.

Hello Divya,

Thanks for reply, So

1. if purchase 50 Lic for secondary, will that do good? Because the primary is handing 700 AP's now.

How will the lic file transfer during the primary failure? any manual intervene required?

2. When we have this HA configured, will they have any VIP IP?? so that in the AP--> high availability tab we no need to have secondary controller IP.
