WLC9800l HA and license

Hi.

Do I need to request 2 licenses for every appliance (HA-setup) - Because I am getting the following error:

Licensing HA configuration error:

Reservation type in active and standby does not match

Or will just one license do? If so, what's the problem then?

normally in 5500-series HA setup , (i guess the 9800 behaves similar)

you need one license for the primary(active) device

and none for the secondary(stand-by) one of the pair needs to be a HA-SKU

he license is loaded on the primary device, and not on the standby

and the license is attached to the UDI (serialno) of the primary device.

only when the primary fails, the standby can use the licenses known to the primary

do you already have a HA setup?

if yes , first make sure the active device is the primary load the license on the device with the right SKU

Yes, I already have a HA setup - i tried to return the license and installed it again same error

looking att your output: Reservation type in active and standby does not match

And reading the documentation:

Smart Licensing Reservation Types
License reservation is a mechanism to reserve node locked licenses and install them on the controller.
The following are the license reservation types:
Permanent License Reservation (PLR)—All licenses are reserved.
Specified License Reservation (SLR)—Only specific licenses are reserved. Supports term licenses.
The controller supports four different entitlement registration or reporting on Smart Licensing or service reservation. Every connecting AP requires a Cisco DNA Center License to leverage the unique value properties of the controller.

collect and compare output from both controllers

you should check step-3 in the license requested

Enabling Specified License Reservation in CSSM

  Command or Action Purpose
Step 1

Login to CSSM.

Step 2

Enter the request code in CSSM. (See Using Specified License Reservation (SLR))

Step 3

License are purchased with the AP’s not with the controller. You also need to have Smart Account which is required for the 9800’s and DNA license. Reach out to TAC since it does show errors on the Smart licensing.
