Introduction

The AP hangs when setup as a WDS master or backup with version 12.3(7)JA

Core Issue

The Cisco Access Point (AP) hangs until power-cycled and does not crash. While in a hung state, the AP does not respond on the console or Telnet. After the AP is re-set, there is no crash info, and it shows the last reload by power on. When the Wireless LAN Solution Engine (WLSE) and the Multi Router Traffic Grapher (MRTG) are used, there is no increase in CPU or memory utilization before or at the time the hang starts.

Resolution

This issue is documented in Cisco bug ID CSCsc01706. Also, refer the Cisco bug ID CSCsc33052 if the issue is related to a memory problem. The hang only occurs on the Wireless Domain Services (WDS) AP. This problem occurs when there are many wireless clients that attempt to associate or roam. This problem is introduced in 12.3(4)JA, but most problems are reported in 12.3(7)JA. This issue is fixed in software versions 12.3(7)JA2 and 12.3(8)JA . In order to resolve this issue, upgrade the Cisco IOS image in the AP.

Bug Details

CSCsc01706 - WDS master/backup hangs with 12.3(7)JA

Description
Symptom: AP1200 configured as the WDS master hangs with 12.3(7)JA. The AP will hang until power cycled and will not crash. While in a 'hung' state the AP will not respond on the console or telnet. After resettting the AP there is no crashinfo and shows last reload by power on. When using WLSE and MRTG we see no increase in CPU or memory utilization before or at the time the hang starts.

Condition: The hang only occurs on the WDS AP. The problem occurs when there are a lots of wireless client trying to associate or roam. The problem only occurs on the WDS AP. The problem is introduced in 12.3(4)JA, but most problems are reported in 12.3(7)JA. The problem is triggered by WLSE sending out SNMP query on MAC spoofing event. The WDS AP records a number of MAC spoofing events at least 2 APs

Note
You cannot configure the Cisco Aironet 1300 AP/Bridge as a WDS master. The 1300 AP/Bridge does not support this functionality. The 1300 AP/Bridge can participate in a WDS network as an infrastructure device in which some other AP or WLSM is configured as a WDS master.
