Resolution

Microsoft Windows XP includes wireless networking in its operating system. Microsoft includes its own utility, Wireless Zero Configuration, to configure the wireless card settings.

To use Light Extensible Authentication Protocol (LEAP), verify that the driver is loaded by referring to the Driver Used for the Cisco Aironet Adapter with Windows XP section of Cisco Aironet Wireless Client Adapters and Windows XP Systems: Drivers and LEAP.

In addition, use the Cisco Aironet Client Utility (ACU) for LEAP login and disable the Windows XP setup utility by referring to the How to Run LEAP on Windows XP section of Cisco Aironet Wireless Client Adapters and Windows XP Systems: Drivers and LEAP.

Note: When using LEAP, special attention should be paid to the use of strong passwords. Cisco LEAP is a password-based algorithm. To minimize the possibility of a successful dictionary attack, use strong passwords, which are difficult to guess. These are some characteristics of strong passwords:

  • A minimum of ten characters

  • A mixture of uppercase and lowercase letters

  • At least one numeric character or one non-alphanumeric character (example: !#@$%)

  • No form of the user's name or user ID

  • A word that is not found in the dictionary (domestic or foreign)
