Resolution

The procedure to downgrade an IOS  image on an access point is the same as upgrading the IOS image on an access point.

Complete these steps to downgrade the IOS image on an access point.

  1. Copy the image file to the appropriate TFTP directory on the workstation. Make sure the TFTP server is properly configured.

Note: For the download and upload algorithms to operate properly, do not rename image directories.

  2. Log into the access point through a Telnet session.

To download the image file from the TFTP server to the access point, and to overwrite the current image, use this command:

archive download-sw /overwrite /reload tftp:[[//location]/directory]/image-name

Where:

  • The /overwrite option overwrites the software image in Flash with the downloaded image.

  • The /reload option reloads the system after downloading the image unless the configuration has been changed and not saved.

  • For //location, specify the IP address of the TFTP server.

  • For /directory/image-name, specify the directory (optional) and the image to download. Directory and image names are case sensitive.

To download the image file from the TFTP server to the access point, and keep the current image, use this command:

archive download-sw /leave-old-sw /reload tftp:[[//location]/directory]/image-name

Where:

  • The /leave-old-sw option keeps the old software version after a download.

Note: To avoid an unsuccessful download, use the archive download-sw /leave-old-sw command, which downloads the image first and does not delete the current running version until the download.

For more information on how to download or upload the image file, refer to these sections of Managing Firmware and Configurations:

In some cases you might not see archive command. In such scenario, you need to use debug capwap console cli command.
