5508 WLC Software Upgrade from 8.0.122.39 to 8.5.135.0

Hi,

I am planning to upgrade 5508 WLC from 8.0.122.39 to 8.5.135.0. As per release notes of 8.5.135.0, anything prior to 8.2.15x has to be first upgraded to 8.2.16x or 8.3.x and then 8.5.135.0. The WLC is currently running 8.0.122.39 and it's a backup image. The primary image is 8.0.140.0.  My concern is, if I upload intermediary image, which is 8.3.x ( I am planning to go for 8.3.143.0), the the current backup image which is the running image would be deleted ? If so, do the APs will have impact ? I am guessing there won't be any impact unless the WLC is reloaded. Please advise.

No, the backup image will be left alone.
Make sure to read the Release Notes. If you have APs that are old then you may need to also load the Supplementary firmware for older APs.

Thanks for the quick response Leo, The backup image will be left alone, does this mean it will not be deleted untill wlcreload? Yes, I don't have old APs that are no longer supported by 8.5.135.0

As long as the boot variable is pointed to the Primary Image, the Secondary Image will be left alone.

Hi Leo,

What kind of "old" AP's do you have that are not supported by 8.5.x?. I did not know about the "supplementary firmware" so I thought I was stuck with my 1040 AP's and 8.3 version. (btw those AP's cannot be replaced immediately).

1040/1140, 1260 final support is 8.3.X.X.
