WAP581 no internetconnection for computers connected on WIFI 2.4 GHz

I have a Cisco WAP 581, that I have reset to factury default.

When I have gone through the setup-guide, I can see the AP from both a PC and 2 different mobiles (iPhone and Samsung) and it is possible to connect to the AP. But they only get 169-address like 169.254.163.211. Eventhough there is a DHCP-server on the network and both the AP and a PC with cable to the network gets access and get to connect to the internet.

The 5GHz network is disabled because off an insufficient power supply. But thats okay, cause I connect to the 2.4 GHz and has disabled the 5GHz, and made sure to disconnect the Band Steer on 2.4 GHz.

It worked before, but something is wrong and I cant connect to the internet.

  - 169.254.163.211 , is a link local address and means that no DHCP server could be found or used (indeed) ; check if you can specify a DHCP server for the WLAN in the WAP's configuration ; also use the latest firmware available (if applicable).
+ Check logs on the device when a client tries to connect ,

Link-Local Addresses in IPv4
In IPv4, link-local addresses fall within the range of 169.254.0.0 to 169.254.255.255. They are often assigned automatically when a device cannot obtain an IP address from a DHCP server. This process is also known as Automatic Private IP Addressing (APIPA).

Hello Marce1000

Thank you for the answer.

The problem is, what I should change in the configuration of the AP. If I connect directly with a cable to the network I get an IP-address on my computer. But if I connect through the AP I don't. So it must be something I should change in the configuration.

Greetings

Michael

@bkbmch

Is this device connected to a switch with PoE? Why It is not getting enough Power? Do you have CDP/LLDP enabled on the switch side?

After the factory reset, did you see the SSID "Cisco SB-Setup” ? Did you connect to It?

This AP have DHCP server on It, but Will use the internal DHCP server only If It does not find DHCP available on the Lan network, which is not your case.

Hello Flavio Miranda

Thanks for your message.

I have en POE-Injector connected directly between the switch and the WAP581. But it still says "Notice: The 5G radio is disabled, du to Power Source now is insufficient (802.3af)" I do not know if CDP/LLDP is enabled but have written the company controlling the switch. Is there anything on the WAP581 that should be configured?

I configured the WAP581 through the setup-guide, that opens up the first time I connect to the AP after reset. I guess that is the "Cisco SB-Setup". I went through that, but did not configure the two areas Wireless Bridge and Single Point Setup, because I only has this one AP.

The only thing I can find about DHCP, is when I configure the AP with the IP, Subnet and Gateway. At first the DHCP Auto Configuration Options was Enabled, and that did not work. But it does not work when I have disabled it?!

Greetings

Michael

@bkbmch if you are using Power-injector then forget about CDP/LLDP. those are protocols that help the AP to negociate power with switch, when they are using PoE.

I dont have access to a WAP581 right now, and it seems to me some configuration is missing on the AP. If you can share here some screens, maybe I can point out some thing to help you.

Hey Flavio

Okay. I have many screenshots from the settings. The main areas are:

  • Getting Started
  • Administration
  • System Configuration
  • Wireless
  • Wireless Bridge
  • Fast Roaming
  • Single Point Setup
  • Access Control
  • Cisco Umbrella
  • Monitor
  • Troubleshoot

What would you like to see?

Under Monitor there is a dashboard, and eventhough it has green checks for Internet, LAN and Wireless, the connected clients doesn't get internet-connection and only the 169-ip address.

Greetings Michael

I would explore those

  • Administration
  • System Configuration
  • Wireless
  • Wireless Bridge

This is screenshots of administration:

Not that. Maybe Wireless or wireless bridge.

Here is system configuration

I will send wireless in just a minut

Greetings Michael

And under system configuration this is management:

I will recommend you to follow this guide

https://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/td/docs/wireless/access_point/csbap/wap581/Admin/b_WAP581_Admin_Guide_New.pdf

And I believe your problem is related to this part in the guide

Step 13 Click Next. The Configure Radio 1 - Name Your Wireless Network window appears.
Step 14 Enter a Network Name. This name serves as the SSID for the default wireless network.
Step 15 Click Next. The Configure Radio 1 - Secure Your Wireless Network window appears.
Step 16 Choose a security encryption type and enter a security key. For a description of these options, see Configuring Security
Settings, on page 53.
Step 17 Click Next. The Configure Radio 1 - Assign the VLAN ID for your Wireless Network window appears.
Step 18 Choose the VLAN ID for traffic received on the wireless network.
We recommend that you assign a different VLAN ID from the default (1) to the wireless traffic, in order to segregate
it from the management traffic on VLAN 1.

Make sure you have vlan created on the switch side. If you do, you need to use the same vlan on the Access Point side.

If you are using vlan1 on switch side, make sure you are using vlan 1 on the Access Point.
