Hello Cisco WLAN experts,
Just want to inform about a potential problem when activating 11k Beacon Radio Measurement in a hospital.
Last week I discovered Intel Connectivity Analytics Whitepaper and following Cisco presentation:
https://www.ciscolive.com/c/dam/r/ciscolive/global-event/docs/2024/pdf/BRKEWN-2926.pdf
Activated following Device Analytics Support and Protected Management Support in WLAN:
So far so good.
But when I followed Cisco's recommendation in Cisco Live BRKEWN-2926 presentation and activated 11k BEacon Radio Measurement on Association and on Roam
and went into weekend, things went very bad in our hospital soon.
Several Cardiotocography and Ultrasonic-Devices went into Blue-Screen and more than 200 Mindray Vital Signs VS9 Monitor Devices stopped displaying a startup Logo-screen only. Investigation showed that this function stops WLAN-clients during Association phase already apparently.
During weekend a SOS-Firmware upgrade from Mindray-Support carried out time-consuming manually on each Mindray device via USB-Interface brought the devices back partially into WLAN again for the most important High urgency patient departements.
On Monday I was forced to take back the 802.11k Beacon Radio MEasurement to stop the chaos.
Happened on 9800 V17.9.5 and 9130-APs.
Seems to lean towards it being chipset and or driver problem being unable to interpret the Action frame and resulting in a failure to respond with EAPOL Message 2, causing a 4-Way handshake timeout, ultimately leading to a disassociation and de-authentication request from the authenticator (AP).
Be careful and never follow a Cisco advise on Friday afternoon!
Pay attention to activate 11k Beacon Radio Measurement !
It seems to be more than a simple reporting function and can block WLAN Clients.
Kind regards
Wini

- @Gehrig_W Well indeed not all client devices support 802.11k and or may have insufficient driver capabilities
to handle it correctly .
