1240 AP and CAPWAP

Hi all,

we operate 1240 access points in LWAPP mode and with several mobilty groups. Now there is a need to integrate 802.11n access points. As I can see there are 1140 and 1250 series supporting the n-standard.

I understand that 1140 series only supports CAPWAP whereas 1250 series supports CAPWAP and LWAPP. Since I can't mix CAPWAP access points and LWAPP access points in the same mobility group and there is only one mobilty group per module I would need an additional module when buying 1140 series access points?

Is there any way to upgrade 1240 to CAPWAP? Unfortunately, I can't find any hint in the documentation.

Sure, all the AP's you mentioned are supported in the 5.2 and 6.0 codes.

Yes, 5.2 and 6.0 will support both CAPWAP and LWAPP, but 1140 (CAPWAP) and 1240 (LWAPP) can't be in the same mobility group (?). Thus I would have to insert an additional wism module.

Hence the question it there is a way (software upgrade) to operate 1240 with CAPWAP.

Firmwares 5.X and 6.X support CAPWAP while 4.X supports LWAPP.  The 1140 is supported starting from 6.0.182.0 (hence the reason why the 1140 operates only in CAPWAP).

If you want to operate the 1240 alongside the 1140 and 1250 the common denominator is firmware version 6.0.182.0 or later.

NOTE:  6.0.182.0 and 6.0.188.0 upgrades the firmware of the radio modules of all the AP's it support.  Especially the 1250.  The radio module's firmware upgrade will allow users to use the 1250 to operate BOTH radios when powered using 15.4w.  Very useful!

The 1240 AP will be running a CAPWAP image when it joins a 5.2. or 6.0 controller.  You can have 1140's and 1240's joined to the same 6.0 controller and have all the controllers in the same mobility group.

From your first answer I probably missed the point that 1240 accesspoints would be upgraded automatically to CAPWAP when they get the new image.

      It is actually my understanding that 6.0.182.0 and 6.0.188.0 is simply backward compatible with LWAPP and supports CAPWAP.  The 1240's aren't actually upgraded to use CAPWAP....they still use LWAPP.  1140's use CAPWAP and thus cannot be joined to controllers running older code because CAPWAP is not supported in that software.  Hope this helps.

Lightweight Access Point Protocol (LWAPP) communications between the controller and lightweight access points can be conducted at ISO Data Link Layer 2 or Network Layer 3. Control and Provisioning of Wireless Access Points protocol (CAPWAP) communications between the controller and lightweight access points are conducted at Network Layer　3. Layer 2 mode does not support CAPWAP.

If you want to operate both 1240 and 1140 in your network then you upgrade to 6.X and later.
