1702 failing to join 9800-CL

Level 1

Hello,

I've got almost 400 1702is that I plan on migrating from a 7510 Flexconnect running 8.2.166.0 to a new 9800-CL running 17.1.1s.  I have successfully migrated over almost 200 1832s with no issue.  The 1702s download the config (twice), join the controller, than immediately disjoin. Any help would be greatly appreciated.  Below is the output from console on the 1702:

I have only tried x800’s and 91x0’s which have DNA license. Your 1700’s might require you to purchase DNA license. Look at the license workflow in this link:

Yes you definitely need DNA licenses for the 1700s but I'm not sure that would cause this.

It all goes wrong after that rename fails. You need to see what's in that event.capwap log file and also look for any crash/core files on the flash. Presume there is enough free space on flash and you've done all the corrupted flash checks as per the field notice?

Hi,

Did you get this resolved?

I'm having a similiar issue, I am manually configuring a primary controller in the Aireos controller to move the APs to the 9800. I have moved some 1832s and have had to use capwap ap restart to trigger the jump. They download the software and join successfully.

I can't see a similiar command on the 1702, I've tried manually downloading the software and reloading. The AP reverts to the Aireos controller.

What version of 9800 are you using?  17.1.1s would not allow 1700's to join, so I had to upgrade.  Note that 1700s are not supported 17.4 or above.

On a side note, 1700s on our 9800 have been nothing short of a disaster.  Issues include rebooting, disjoining the controller, trouble with associating devices, and my favorite, one-way audio issues with Cisco 8821s.  I would highly suggest upgrading everything to 1832s.

Hi I'm on  17.3.3 which looks to support them. I'm getting the CAPWAP DNS entry changed today, i will reboot one and see if that forces them across.

We have some new 9105s which we are using to place 1602s on the legacy controller. Sounds like we need to phase 1702s out as well!

Yes you should replace the 1702s otherwise you'll be stuck on an old version of IOS-XE on the 9800 because of them.

I can confirm this worked once the DNS entry was changed. I had to clear the config via the old GUI to get them to move even with the primary controller configured.

Did you try doing a factory reset on the AP and make sure your option 43 was updated to point to the 9800?
