-how can RP port will be connected to each other via switches

-do we need any modification in the registered 50th APs after making the HA

Hi Mahmoud,

Regarding WLCs in different location : It is required for us to have direct physical connectivity between the two WLCs via the redundancy port and also they should have management IP in same subnet. The distance between the two WLCs can got upto 100 metres as per the cabling standard.

If the distance between the two locations is higher than this and if cabling is not possible between two WLCs then you can consider old AP failover feature.

http://mrncciew.com/2013/04/07/ap-failover/

If you want then you can manually assign the primary and secondary WLC IP to each AP but  this is not a must.

thank sandeep for your reply

WLCs at our solution must be distributed between switches so correct the blow

  • VlanX Management (M) + Redundancy Management (RM)
  • VlanY Redundancy Port (RP) via switches

-we have 50 AP license at each WLC will it be 100 after HA?

-what conf need to be done from APs sides?

Hi Mahmoud,

VlanY Redundancy Port (RP) via switches

As per knowledge, The RP needs to be connected on a direct link.

we have 50 AP license at each WLC will it be 100 after HA?

Yes, If you are using two wlc as seperately then yes total count will be 100(50 on each wlc).

No if you are using as HA: it will be only 50 AP

primary wlc: AIR-CT5508-50-K9 and secondary: AIR-CT5508-HA-K9

then you will have only 50 AP license.

Hello Sandeep

I have read a document from cisco that said we can use different switches as blow

http://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/td/docs/wireless/controller/technotes/7-5/High_Availability_DG.html#pgfId-78161

what additional conf need to be at switches configuration

-all of my WLCs have base-ap-count 50 so after ha license will be 50 or 100?

Hi,

Thta is for WISM-2 not for 5508 wlc.

Note A direct physical connection between Active and Standby Redundant Ports is highly recommended.

-all of my WLCs have base-ap-count 50 so after ha license will be 50 or 100?

1.You have both WLC in normal mode so need one WLC must convert to HA-SKU mode(It require minimum 50 AP license)

2.After converting to HA, then you can start configuring AP SSO or HA between these two controllers.

3. After connection, you will have 50 AP license on primary and secondary wlc will takeover in case if primary is down.

Now understand the failover case when you have One WLC has a valid AP Count (50 AP)license and the other WLC has a HA SKU UDI.

  • HA SKU is a new SKU with a Zero AP Count License.
  • The device with HA SKU becomes Standby the first time it pairs up.
  • AP-count license info will be pushed from Active to Standby.
  • On event of Active failure, HA SKU will let APs join with AP-count obtained and will start 90-day countdown. The granularity of this is in days.
  • After 90-days, it starts nagging messages. It will not disconnect connected APs.

so in HA mode you can only use 50 AP max practically.
