Gartner Group came out with a bulletin saying:
"All access points/IP phones are obsolete due to a fundamental change in the proposed 802.3af spec as of Nov 2001"
I can't find any more info as to why. Anybody have some feedback?

If a proposed standard specification changes, existing hardware *planned* to follow the standard won't be obselete.
It won't be compliant, but it'll still work fine with all the other existing hardware using the same specification.
Check the IEEE pages for more info on the 802.3af standard, see what changes have been made.

My question wasn't about existing equipment. If I want to add an IP phone or an access point using inline power do I have to replace everything????
What is Cisco's responsibility as far as complying to standards?
