It is not JUST the model of the AP or controller but the answer hinges on what firmware the controller can support.
The Compatibility Matrix contains a very detailed list of what firmware a controller can use and what an AP can load.
NOTE: The Matrix has been around since 8.0.X.X and this is the first time I've seen a comment like this.
IF the contents of the Matrix is daunting, then read WLC Release Notes because they will have a list of APs supported by each firmware release.
