If you've bought LAPs you will need a WLC or they won't work. I believe you can convert them to IOS APs but I think you need a WLC to do so (it holds the IOS image that the APs will upload). Either way, you either need to order IOS based APs or a controller.

To get the LWAPP AP up and running you need the WLC.. there is NO limitations at all.. its all advantages!!

The code running on the AP is IOS... Yup we can have 100 APs as well!! it will work awesome.. but while troubleshooting or re configuring the APs, this time we need to configure all the 100 that means 100 times configuration!! Just like school assignment , If we have WLC then just one time, then it will pushed to all the APs in one GO!!
Lemme know if htis answered ur question!!

Hello Surendra,
Your replies has been very helpful and cleared.I
I've heard that AIR-LAP are supplied without and they need to be join with WLC to make it work. Is that true ??
Thanks
04-19-2011 09:37 AM
Ok..
here is the thing!! AP-LAP or AIR-AP is just the HARDWARE... the software that runs on it will decide whether we need the WLC or not..
Normally AIR-LAP comes with a LWAPP image or software by default.. and AIR-AP comes with IOS image or the software by default..
that is..
c1130-k9w7-tar.124-25d.JA.tar here, W7 tells us that this is IOS image and does not need the WLC.. where in...
c1130-rcvk9w8-tar.124-21a.JA2.tarhere rcvk9w8 tells us that this is LWAPP image which needs WLC..
We can use the above images on both AIR-LAP and AIR-AP to convert and use, just like how you have done.. that is W7 image on the AIR-LAP
lemme know if this answered ur questions!!

c1130-rcvk9w8-tar.124-21a.JA2.tarhere rcvk9w8 tells us that this is LWAPP image which needs WLC..
