AP 1142N dual radio 2.4GHz and 5GHz

                   What determines which radio a client associates with?

I have radio 0 the 2.4 set to channel 8 (just for testing purposes at my desk) and the channel width to below 40. And the radio 1 the 5GHz set to DFS band 2 above 40.

Is it totally the client settings and client card type (a,b,g,n)?

I would go with:

speed basic-11.0 12.0 18.0 24.0 36.0 48.0 54.0 m0. m1. m2. m3. m4. m5. m6. m7. m8. m9. m10. m11. m12. m13. m14. m15.

power client local

channel width 20

channel 2412 (1) ( 2437 6, 2462 11)

station-role root

Basically, disable all rates below 11.  This shrinks the cell size which can help if a client is 'sticking' to an AP instead of roaming when it should.

Yes, the client will determine which frequency it will associate to.  You can go in and set the driver to force it one way or the other.

With the WLC, there is a feature called band-select.  When you enable this feature the WLC will suppress probe responses to a client on the 2.4GHz, that it hears on both the 5GHz and 2.4GHz to try to get the client on the 5GHz.

P.S. you shouldn't bond the 2.4GHz, as you only have the three non-overlapping channels to work with.

How should I set the channel for the 2.4 radio?

on the 2.4GHz, you want to use 1,6, and 11.  These are the three channels that are ~25MHz appart, so they don't interfer with each other.
