Cisco AP unable to join Cisco Catalyst 3850 Switch with Integrated Wireless Controller

Any suggestion on how to solve the problem with the Cisco Wireless APs (AIR-CAP702W-S-K9) cannot join the controller ( WS-C3850-24P) ?

The wireless APs which are directly connected to the controller is able to join. However, any wireless APs which are not connected directly to the controller (switch connected using trunk link to the controller) cannot join the controller.

Please help.

You cannot use 3850 integrated controller to join any in-directly connect APs to that switch. This is how Converged Access design is.

Q.    Does the Cisco Catalyst 3850 support indirectly connected access points?
A.     No. The Cisco Catalyst 3850 switch will always terminate the CAPWAP tunnel locally. Pass-through mode or indirectly connected access point is not supported at this time. Note that a Cisco Catalyst 3850 12-port or 24-port SFP model can be a good choice to act as mobility controller for a stack of Cisco Catalyst 3850 switches that terminate CAPWAP tunnels locally.

What model of switch these  other APs connect to ? If it is not 3850/3650, then you have to have AireOS controller to register those.

I would suggest one of these bundle where you get 25AP licensed 2504 for free of charge when you buy 2 APs.

Hi Rasika,

We would like to use our old Cisco wireless controller 526 with Cisco 521 access points together at the same time in the same network since the Cisco 3850 does not indirect AP connection.

Is it possible?

You can use it, but as previously suggested, i would recommend you to go for a 2504.

Thanks Rasika.

Any idea how can we utilize the rest of the Cisco APs without associating with the Cisco 3850? Need to purchase separate wireless controller on the same network?
