Cisco WLC 3700 Performance Problem

Hi,

We have a Ubiquiti UAP-AC-PRO that we're testing, the performance of this is significantly better than a Cisco 3700 we have connected to a 5508 controller. On a file transfer we see the Ubiquiti perform twice as fast on two different 5Ghz clients, one with an older Intel 6205 (N) and one a 8260 (AC). APs are in the same location and I don't believe any enviromental issues are occurring. The connection speeds appear the same on the client when connected to the AP.

Our question is what configuration have we got wrong on the 3700/5508 as clearly something is wrong? On the controller the older 6205 client shows a connection speed of m7 and the newer 8260 shows m9 ss2, is this the problem? In Windows it shows a connection of 300/866.

Pls share "show wlan <wlan_id>" & "show client detail <client_mac_add>" output from your 5508.

<wlan_id> is the ID number where your client associate to.

As you can see above, client got MCS7 & got 2 spacial stream. This equals to 650Mbps data rate if you use 80MHz channel width.

If you see below chart (taken from Andrew's blog), your require SNR of 35 to achieve MCS8 which is the next higher data rate. Since your client get SNR of 33, this is the highest rate you can get.

Other thing I would check it those two different AP's power level & channel they operate. I noticed given AP operate in CH100.

Below is the same client connected to the closer AP, both APs are on the same desk as the client, one AP powered at a time. The Ubiquiti has a file transfer speed twice that of the 3700, not sure why it's so different? Any other settings that could be limiting it?

Alright, I've converted the 3700 to autonomous and can get the same speeds now. So what could be wrong with the controller configuration that would be halving the speeds?

Hi Ben,

So what is the file transfer speed you get with Autonomous AP ? What is the value you get with 5508 ? How long this file transfer occurs (longer the better)

You can test it with FlexConnect AP mode & see what speed you get. Also try some other way of testing (iperf,etc) prior to come to a conclusion.

Hi,

We've had the same 3700 AP with both the autonomous and lightweight images. In autonomous we get 25-30MB/s transfer speeds with a N client, we get 50-60MB/s with an AC client, this is copying a 5GB ISO in Windows. The same AP and clients when connected to the controller see the speeds halved, about 12MB/s (N) and 33-36MB/s (AC).

I think it's a configuration setting just not sure what, the same speeds apply connecting to different WLANs configured on the controller.

I did try Flexconnect and didn't seem to make a difference, is there a way to confirm it's operating in Flexconnect?

In FlexConnect mode, you need to change AP mode from Local to FlexConnect & configure your WLAN for FlexConnect Local Switching. AP connected switchport should be trunk port and native vlan should be on AP management vlan. Refer below guide for detail explanation.

Since traffic terminate on your local switch (not go to WLC), I would expect same speed as autonomous. Pls test this and see

FlexConnect is enabled on the AP, the WLAN has FlexConnect Local Switching enabled and the switchport has been reconfigured and we're seeing the same speeds.

In FlexConnect mode, traffic does not go to WLC. so if you think there is something on WLC contributing to this slowness, then you should see the issue with Local mode & not seen with FlexConnect local switching.

Since, you have configured those settings that need for MCS rates (802.1X with WMM enable), I do not think any configuration issues.

You can test with open SSID (without any security), if you think those encryption could cause this.

Also I would test with different software code on controller ? what is the current software version you use ?

Are you running any of this TAC recommended code on your 5508 ?

Yes, it could be this.

Did you raise a TAC case for this ?

Will log a case, running iperf currently, only getting 149Mbits/sec on 8.2.111.0 in both local and flexconnect, will downgrade and report.

We've downgraded to 8.0.133.0, the problem still exists when in Local mode, when we switch to FlexConnect it resolves the problem. We've upgraded back to 8.2.111.0 and the issue occurs both on Local and FlexConnect.

This could be a bug?
