Clients Disconnecting and Poorly Roaming when switched to FlexConnect

Hi All,

I've recently migrated one of my sites on to FlexConnect and users are reporting very poor experience with their WIFI mainly disconnecting when roaming (when the user leaves their desk) or taking too long to reconnect. We have several other sites already using FlexConnect without an issue. Checking ISE, there no unusual auth failures so have ruled that out.

This site is fairly large and spread over 3 levels.

Prior to switching to FlexConnect, WLANs were both centrally switched and authenticated and did not experience any issues.

We are currently using a 5520 WLC and 3800 series APs using code  8.5.135.0

FlexConnect configuration is local switching and is using central Authentication with Radius (ISE)

Here is one WLAN configurations - this one has the most users

I have performed client debug on several machines for the whole day and had uploaded the debug to the WLC debug Analyzer to hopefully get an better understanding of what is happening but feeling a little overwhelmed with the output and not sure on where to start.

From what I've tried to understand I feel that the client machines are always doing a complete Re-Auth when roaming from AP to AP but i could be wrong.

Client devices connecting to this WLAN are both Lenovo X1 laptops or Macbook Pro/Airs only on the above WLAN.

Attached is a client debug for 3 machines I logged for the whole day.

Looking for some help here.

Thanks, D.

Hi,

I see the log '802.1x 'timeoutEvt' Timer expired'

could you please Run 'show advanced eap' from the CLI. You need to increase your EAP Request Identity timeout.

Regards

EAP-Identity-Request Timeout (seconds)........... 30
EAP-Identity-Request Max Retries................. 2
EAP Key-Index for Dynamic WEP.................... 0
EAP Max-Login Ignore Identity Response........... enable
EAP-Request Timeout (seconds).................... 30
EAP-Request Max Retries.......................... 2
EAPOL-Key Timeout (milliseconds)................. 1000
EAPOL-Key Max Retries............................ 2
EAP-Broadcast Key Interval....................... 3600

The EAP timers are default values and have not been modified.

Not sure if you ever solved this... but I had exactly the same problem.  I switched roaming preauth from "over the ds" to "over the air" and everything was solved.

also make sure you have a flex connect group setup (other than the default group).

I'm assuming you have 1 AP group setup for the entire building ?    I would also double check to make sure the APs are in the same AP group,  I've had the same issue when one of the APs fell out of the AP group and joined the default group.
